Project History
San Antonio College was awarded a $25,000 National Endowment for the Humanities Focus Grant to fund the initial development of the Internet Mapping for the Humanities Project.
The grant period began during fall of 2003 and ended in fall 2004. During the first project phase, fall 2003, three modules were created using the most advanced Web based GIS technology. These projects were field-tests in spring 2004. During the second phase of the project, Spring and Summer 2004, four additional modules were developed. Subsequently, numerous other modules and map services have been added.
The project is featured at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, World History Sources, under the Teaching Sources section - Maps.
Meet the Project Team Members and faculty awarded mini-grants.
The Project sponsored the following activities:
- International Education Week 2004 Presentation, Wednesday, 17 November, 3 PM, Room 120, Visual Arts and Technology Center, two NEH project distinguished visiting scholars, Professor Richard E. W. - The project team and participating faculty combine historical and cultural materials with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping services for Internet delivery to students.
- At the conclusion of the grant period the college will have a variety of mapping modules available on the Web and will have a cohort of trained faculty willing to mentor others who wish to incorporate mapping services in their courses.
- The Web-based project will provide a broad range of benefits to humanities studies and will serve students and faculty beyond our college borders.
The project makes use of Arc Internet Map Server (ArcIMS) software developed by Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), Inc. SAC is a site-licensed, designated ESRI educational institution.
